2 years agoJulian Schnabel, I’m Andy Warhol, Who Are You?
Julian Schnabel, who is known for his paintings on unconventional materials like broken crockery and truck tarpaulins, first painted on velvet in 1982. Ranging in its associations from opera-house curtains to kitsch artworks, velvet might be seen as fitting for a portrait of artist Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987), who wore black velvet jackets and sponsored the 1960s rock band The Velvet Underground. Schnabel’s depiction of the bare-torsoed artist alludes to the portraits of Warhol made by painter Alice Neel and photographer Richard Avedon soon after Warhol was shot and critically wounded in his studio in 1968.
Schnabel gave this portrait to Warhol, who kept it in his collection until his death. In return, Schnabel received several portraits that Warhol had done of him. The two artists admired each other’s work and shared the view that imagery drawn from popular culture can be a source for art.”
